What Question Would Jesus Ask You Today?

Filling in the Blank

It didn’t take me long to imagine. “Donna, why are you ________?” The blanks filled themselves:

  • “Why are you faint-hearted?”
  • “Why aren’t you trusting Me?”
  • “Why are you searching for joy in all the wrong places?”

Ouch. Jesus doesn’t pull punches, does He? His questions pierce right through the surface and get to the heart of the matter. But even as they are convicted, they are also comforting. Why? Because they remind me of His faithfulness in the middle of my mess.

For every failure I confessed, He met me with His character:

  • “I’m faint-hearted, but You’ll never leave me or forsake me” (Hebrews 13:5).
  • “I struggle with unbelief, but You’ll finish the work You started in me” (Philippians 1:6).
  • “I’m scared of the future, but Your plans stand firm forever” (Psalm 33:11).
  • “I feel broken, but You are near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18).

Jesus: The Master of Questions

Jesus was a pro at asking questions that cut through the noise. Remember when He asked Peter in John 21, “Do you love Me?”—not once, but three times? Each question dug deeper, revealing Peter’s heart and giving him the chance to reaffirm his devotion.

Or how about His conversation with Philip in John 14? After Philip asked to see the Father, Jesus replied, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know Me, Philip?” Talk about a wake-up call! How often does Jesus whisper the same to us?

What Do You Really Want?

One of my favorite moments is in Matthew 20, when Jesus asks two blind men, “What do you want Me to do for you?” He knew what they needed, but the question made them say, “We want to see.” That exchange always hits me. When Jesus asks, “What do you want?” It’s not about worldly wishes but our deepest, truest needs.

Where Is Your Faith?

Then there’s the story in Luke 8. The disciples were terrified as a storm-tossed their boat. Jesus calmed the waves and turned to ask, “Where is your faith?” It’s a powerful reminder for us. Is my faith in people? Circumstances? Or is it Jesus who has authority over the wind and waves?

A Mirror for the Heart

Jesus’ questions make us uncomfortable, but they’re meant to be. They reveal what’s really going on inside—our fears, doubts, and misplaced hopes. His piercing eyes, described in Revelation as “like a flame of fire,” see past every excuse and straight into our hearts.

Yet, even as we’re laid bare before Him, we’re not left alone. Hebrews 4 reminds us that Jesus is our compassionate, high priest who understands our weaknesses and invites us to confidently approach the throne of grace.

What’s Jesus Asking You Today?

So, what’s the question Jesus is asking you today? Whatever it is, know this: His questions are not to condemn but to restore, heal, and sanctify. Take them to heart and let them draw you closer to Him.
