Through God’s Eyes: How Does He See You?

Have you ever stopped to wonder how God sees you? Not just in a textbook, “God loves me” kind of way, but deep down in your heart—what do you feel He thinks of you? If you’re like most of us, your answer might not come easy. Maybe you sense His love or struggle, wondering if…

Have you ever stopped to wonder how God sees you? Not just in a textbook, “God loves me” kind of way, but deep down in your heart—what do you feel He thinks of you? If you’re like most of us, your answer might not come easy. Maybe you sense His love or struggle, wondering if He sees you at all. Either way, let’s dig into this together and uncover a richer, more personal view of how God truly sees you.

The Image of God in Your Mind

Take a moment and really think about it. What would it look like if God had a picture of you in His heart? Would He smile when He thinks of you, or would He shake His head in disappointment?

If we’re honest, many of us wrestle with the idea that God is distant, uninterested, or even frustrated with us. We observe Him loving and blessing others. However, doubt arises regarding ourselves: Why would He care about me?

Past experiences often shape our perception of God. These include how we were raised, what we were taught in church, and even how others have treated us. You’re not alone if your understanding of Him feels heavy, distant, or distorted. But the good news is that the image isn’t set in stone.

A God Who Meets Us Where We Are

From the very beginning, God has reached out to us in ways we can feel. God didn’t just drop a list of rules and expect us to figure it out. Instead, He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden, guiding them firsthand. Through the Tabernacle, He surrounded His people with rich sights, sounds, and scents. Later, He sent prophets. They painted vivid pictures of His love. These images include a mother nurturing her child, a shepherd guarding his flock, and a fire warming the cold. Then, He came to us in the flesh in the most powerful act of love. Emmanuel—God with us (Matthew 1:23). Jesus showed us the Father’s heart in a way we could see, hear, and touch (1 John 1:1-3). He didn’t just tell us about God’s love—He was that love in action.

Breaking Free from Misconceptions

Despite all the ways God has shown His love, many of us still struggle to believe it’s for us. Our wounds, disappointments, and the voices of shame make it hard to accept. Christian psychiatry even acknowledges that many believers live as though God is against them—despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

So, how do we begin to shift that perspective? How do we start feeling the truth of His love?

Steps to Seeing God’s True Heart

If you’re ready to move toward a healthier, more loving view of God, here are a few simple ways to start:

1. Experience Scripture in a New Way

Instead of just reading the Bible, try stepping into it. Pick a passage—a Psalm, a moment from Jesus’ life—and let yourself be there. How would your body react? What emotions rise up? What would it feel like to lock eyes with Jesus in that moment?

2. Find God in Others

Healing often happens in the community. Who in your life makes you feel seen, loved, and safe? Spend time with them. Let them be a tangible reminder of God’s kindness. When we allow others to love us well, it opens our hearts. It helps us believe that maybe, just maybe, God’s love is real for us, too.

3. Reconnect with God Through His Creation

Have you ever watched a sunset and felt something shift in your soul? There’s something healing about stepping into God’s creation. Feel the grass under your feet, watch the waves crash, listen to birds sing. These simple moments reconnect us with the One who made it all—including you.

4. Be Honest with Jesus

No pretense. No masks. Just you. Take a deep breath, center yourself in prayer, and tell Him exactly where you are. Angry? Sad? Lonely? Scared? He already knows, and He’s not afraid of your feelings. Let Him sit with you in them. The moment you invite Him in, transformation begins.

When Jesus Shows Up, Everything Changes

Healing takes time. Shifting how we see God is a process. But what is the beautiful thing? He’s already close. You don’t have to go searching. Just open your heart, even a little, and let Him in.

Maybe you can’t fully grasp His love yet. That’s okay. Borrow the faith of those who believe it until it starts to feel real for you, too. Because the truth is this: You are deeply loved, completely seen, and absolutely cherished by God. And that is how He sees you.
